Using a smaller barrel than the reposado, this anejo undergoes 18 months of aging which allows really deep caramel and dried fruit character. This is the after dinner treat out of the 3. After being in the glass for some time it opens up more to reveal some chocolate notes, hard lemon candy and sandalwood on the nose.
I usually like my tequilas silver and tend to prefer my wines and spirits unoaked. But after a couple sips of the 123 Añejo Tequila (Tres), consider this clear spirits guy converted to the Cult of Oak. Aged 18 months in fresh white oak barrels (no ex-bourbon, rum, or fortified barrel tricks here), this certified organic añejo with a good lookin' label and gorgeous recycled glasswork punches way above its weight. A lowland tequila that whiskey drinkers should enjoy as well, with delicious notes of caramel, dried tropical fruits, vanilla and dark chocolate. Walton Goggins, he of Justified fame, came in the store the other day, picked up a bottle of this, smiled and said to me: "This here oughta do the trick." Let me tell you, Walton's not kidding. One of the best añejos we've got at a value that can't be beat.
