Staff Pick Notes

In the world of dessert wine, Sauternes steals the spotlight with its opulence and eye watering prices. But if you’re looking for affordable decadence, head ~20 km northeast to the tiny appellation of Barsac. Although it's technically part of the Sauternes AOC, Barsac stands apart from its southern neighbors: the landscape is flat, the climate is cool, and the grapes grow on a mix of sand and limestone, giving the wines a distinct freshness. And within the Barsac appellation, Chateau Coutet stands out for producing uniquely delicious, lively wines. The 2016 vintage, made from 75% Semillion and a mix of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, is the perfect encapsulation of Barsac: aromas of orange, grapefruit, and acacia blossom give way to a palate that’s fresh, but full of ripe stone fruit. Sip on its own or alongside pate or roquefort.

For white Bordeaux, only three varieties are permitted: Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillion, and Muscadelle. The exact percentages of each grape variety used in any...
