Gewurztraminer Reserve, Domaine Meyer-Fonné - 2020

750 mL
Item # 33665

This very aromatic and floral wine from the village of Katzenthal is from a producer who specializes in Gewürztraminer. The winemaker at Meyer-Fonné is a Zind-Humbrecht disciple, so there is some richness on the palate that is exquisitely balanced with acidity.

Staff Pick Notes

Certain grapes have just struck me the wrong way and I've had a preconceived dislike without even giving something a chance. Gewurztraminer was always that grape. In my mind, it was a flabby, overly aromatic, sweet, and viscous wine. I found no pleasure in drinking it, so I wrote it off. I shouldn't have done that. After the first sip of this Meyer-Fonné Gewurztraminer Reserve 2019, I realized what an elegant and rich grape this can be. The overtly flabby wine is prevented by a perfect pick time. The grapes are left on vine just long enough to ripen fully in all the aromatic glory while picking early enough to preserve this wine's pop of acidity. White pepper, lychee, pear, grapefruit, and rose power out of the glass while more subtle notes of saffron, ginger, and dill add a savory element to this off-dry, texturally rich wine.

Once part of the Holy Roman Empire, Alsace was gradually put under French sovereignty during the 17th Century and eventually made one of the provinces of France. Yet, as evidenced by the persistece of a dialect of Upper German in the region even today, Alsace's ties to Germany...

Gewürztraminer

The variety is cultivated all over the world, but the best examples tend to come from Alsace: these are full-bodied wines with a golden color. The pink-skinned Gewürztraminer does best in cooler climates, which allow the grapes to develop good balancing acidity. This is a necessary attribute of any...
