As an aging millennial, I often wonder: were things REALLY better in the 60’s? The jury’s out on fashion, art, and politics, but I’m happy to report that, in the case of Antique Zucca Rabarbo, the 60’s never stopped swinging. Zucca’s lore dates to 1845, when Ettore Zucca infused a mix of Chinese rhubarb root (rabarbaro), citrus zest, and cardamom into a tonic for his sick wife. The amaro became so popular that, by the time this bottle hit the shelves in the late 1960’s, Zucca Rabarbo was a bar favorite across Milan. Sadly, Zucca was bought by a holding company who changed the formula for the US market (they bumped the ABV to 30%), and deprived connoisseurs of the original version. This low ABV edition is a return to the glory days: smooth and light, with notes of notes of chocolate, smoke, and a long bittersweet finish. Savor the past!
