Item # 36076

This Grillo is fermented on the skins and aged in old oak. No sulfur is added. The juice remains in contact with the skins for 20 days (ten days of maceration, and ten of fermentation). Aged in oak for at least one year. The wine has a deep orange hue and tannic structure that work more like a red wine at the table.

Production Methods

Practicing Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

Marco de Bartoli’s skin-contact grillo was probably the best orange wine I’ve tasted thus far. The grillo grapes for this wine are farmed organically, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and there is no added sulfur to the final wine. Maceration on the skins continues for 10 days and interestingly, the aging regimen occurs in both oak and clay amphora for a year and even after the wine is racked off of the skins for another couple of months. Integer is a refreshing and lively orange wine; notes of crisp green apple, lemon, apricot, peach, and nectarine are present on the palate with notes of white flowers detected on the nose. Due to the amount of time the wine spends macerating on the skins, there is definitely more structure and a little bit of tannin to help balance out the wine, making this equally serious and delicious.
