Eli Ben Zaken's Domaine Du Castel quite literally put Israeli winemaking on the international map, basing his estate on the Bordeaux model of blending, and producing several labels of wine at different price points. (His red "Grand Vin" is probably still the best wine in Israel) His white wine, Blanc du Castel, is an oaked Chardonnay that drinks precisely how I would imagine a California Chardonnay from the 80's would drink. Is it exciting? Absolutely not. Boring? Probably. Extremely high quality? Undoubtedly. Indeed, this white is maybe Israel's finest. If I need to impress a Jewish parent or bring something special to a seder, this is my first choice every time. I don't need excitement for the best. - James
