Rosato, Terre Siciliane, Bonavita - 2024

Long ago I enjoyed this Sicilian rosato on a warm day over a dinner that stretched for hours. The unique label made an impression on me, and I searched for it at wine shops for years to no avail. Turns out, winemaker Giovanni Scarfone only produces a few hundred cases a year, so get your hands on it while you can! This rosato is made from indigenous grapes grown on just two hectares of vineyards in the most north-easterly Sicilian DOC of Faro. You can see Calabria from the winery! Their 80 year old vines are grown on soils comprised of clay and volcanic ash known as tuff, and have never seen fertilizers or chemical pesticides. As a result, you get a fuller bodied rosé, crackling with fruity, sour raspberry aromas, at extreme tension with its crystalline, volcanic minerality. Perfect for a charcuterie board or a four-course summer meal.
