Richard Stávek, Medovy Muskatek - 2022

750 mL
Item # 38814

Richard Stavek loves to experiment. He's a true farmer, has plenty of honey as he keeps bees and even added some propolis to this wine during fermentation for flavor. This is an orange wine, cloudy, not for everyone but especially for those who love lush, aromatic and unique wines. This is a dry white wine but an orange wine as the color attained from the long maceration renders the wine more amber in color. Medovy means honey in Czech and Muskatek is in reference to the particular Muscat grape that he uses to ferment this wine.

Production Methods

Natural

Wine made from organically or biodynamically grown grapes with minimal intervention avoiding the use of chemicals, additives and technology.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

Richard Stavek is a pioneering natural vigneron. His Medovy Muskatek is a testament to his ingenuity toward wine cultivation and vinification. Along with viticulture, the man raises goats for cheese and keeps bees for honey. He adds a couple of spoons of this honey which ferments with the sugars of the wine must. This adds to the flavor profile of the wine which includes apricots, pine, baking spice, and that touch of honey. It has a pronounced aroma of orange flowers, peaches, allspice, and dried leaves. It has an energy that is rare in orange wines which shows best on the first day of opening. A melange of Muscat varieties compose the wine. Skin fermentation lasts for 7 days in wooden tanks. It is then transferred in large acacia barrels to age 10 months. It is bottled with no filtration and no added sulfur.
