Staff Pick Notes

When I first tasted this wine I thought it had to be Chenin Blanc. With all it's warm wooly golden pear notes and light amber hue in the glass. You could imagine just how far my jaw dropped when I found out this was a wine made from Melon de Bourgogne (my chin sunk through the floor). So if you dare (it is New York) close your eyes and forget all the things you thought you knew about Muscadet. Lose the images of crunchy white minerals, the bright lime leaves and all the zippy oyster pairings. Now open your eyes and paint an image of airy tidal waves freckled with tropical fruit, the edge of the water airily frothing at a lemon rind shore. The gold breeze blowing at the corners of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Yes. Sweet sweet paradise.

More About This Wine

Melon de Bourgogne

Muscadet

The coolest (temperature-wise) of the Loire Valley appellations, this region is most famous for its bracingly dry, seafood-friendly whites. Made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape (virtually unheard of in the rest of the world), these refreshing wines are idyllic partners for oysters or mussels.

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.
