The Barrel Proof single barrels from this old family brand that we've been able to buy over the past couple of years have been one of the biggest revelations in Bourbon. This is old school, full throttle stuff with a recognizable Wathen's stamp on it. At full proof and 8yrs old, the nose has plenty of intensity but is a little muted at at 63.1% ABV water goes a long way here opening this whiskey up bringing forth layers of roasted peanuts, dried lavender, apple butter, honey glazed carrots, apricot, Mandarin orange with faint notes of sherry, tobacco and baking spice on the finish.

"This smells like the basement in my parents' cabin." Descriptions such as this bring a grin across my face because as much as tangible flavors and aromas can be used for what we drink, it’s equally about the fond memories we can attach to our favorite wines and spirits. The Wathens-Medley family has been distilling premium bourbons even before the years of prohibition, until reserves were sufficient enough to have aged bourbons to offer, doing so now for eight generations. With their unchanging low rye mashbill, the intensity on the nose of this is abrasively pine box at its core backed by high ABV. However, don’t be afraid to introduce water as it unearths lavender, chamomile, dried fruit, chewy caramel and bellowing smokiness on the back end.
