Camiño Real is from 40 to 60 year old Mencía parcels around the town of Amandi. Spontaneously fermented with whole clusters in open top vats. The wine was aged in different sized casks before bottling unfiltered. A richer type of Mencía. A red wine to pair with beef tenderloin with miushrooms.

Staff Pick Notes

Wines from Ribera Sacra are often overshadowed by those of its more famous neighbors like Rioja and Ribera del Duero, but don't let their under-the-radar status fool you. There are some real gems to be found. Like this Mencia-based blend from Pedro Rodriguez, whose family has been making wine in the region for generations. Vines grow on steep slopes (think Mosel) making for challenging harvests, but lending the wines a bright freshness. This blend is mostly old-vine Mencia with a handful of other local varieties. It opens with aromas of raspberry, cherry & spice, while on the palate the red fruit leads to a deeper core of dark fruit (blackberry), smoked herbs & leather. It's beautifully balanced, dense without being heavy and silky smooth. The obvious pairing is roast pork, but monkfish with a chorizo sauce would be downright inspired.

The river exerts its cooling influence on the vines (mostly Mencía), which cling to their spots on terraced vineyards cut steeply up the riverbanks. Vines must struggle for nutrients here, and this gives concentration to the fruit. The red wines of Ribeira Sacra are...
