Casal do Ramilo, Ramilo Malvasia de Colares - 2021

750 mL
Item # 41998

A wildly complex Malvasia unlike any we've had before. Dry, oxidized with a saline note and aromas of honeycomb. An orange wine made by macerating 50% of the grapes on their skins in new barrique while the other half was fermented in granite lagares. The winemaker for Casal do Ramilo replanted vines at his family's property in Colares and now owns the largest single plot in the area.

Production Methods

Practicing Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

I treat looking for interesting/unique wines in the same manner as thrifters look for vintage, mint condition pieces from regarded fashion houses. Casal do Ramilo has been producing wines for four generations in one of the most touted regions in all of Portugal, that of Colares which sits near the Atlantic Ocean. The sea’s influence combined with the sandy hills in Sintra that their grapes grow on create an environment uniquely their own. This is 100% Malvasia that is a blend of fermentation in stainless steel without lees and held in oak and fermentation on the lees in open air lagares, calling back to tradition while implementing modern technique. The textured layers offered by this rich golden wine speak to orange blossom, nutty toffee, pine cones, herbal sage notes with minerality and salinity draped over in Colares fashion.

More About This Wine

Portugal

The Dão and the Douro are the most important regions as far as red Portuguese table wine is concerned. Douro wines tend to be a bit fuller and fleshier than their Dão counterparts, which are generally lighter and higher in acidity. Reds from both regions are dense, rustic, and well-balanced. They also show their terroir quite clearly, and represent a great alternative to the modern fruit-driven style. Vinho Verde is Portugal’s most famous white wine. Literally translated as "green wine," it...
