Staff Pick Notes

What is Abruzzi rye? It’s an heirloom grain variety that has been used in the south for ages as a winter cover crop and livestock feed. It’s hardy, early maturing, and a favorite of grazing animals. As an occasional grazing animal, I wondered: what does this mean for me? Well, in the capable hands of Scott Blackwell, Culinary Institute of America trained baker and owner/distiller of High Wire, Abruzzi is used in all its glory to produce this exceptional single-barrel rye whiskey, that’s exclusive to Astor (and therefore you, if you’re reading this). It delivers, along with a touch of white corn and malted barley, a high-proof (55.35% ABV) yet incredibly sip-able spirit. Showing caramel, espresso, and cocoa up front, it finishes exceedingly long with leather, cigar wrapper, orange peel, allspice, and a whiff of campfire smoke.
