Plavac Mali, Citluk - 2021

Item # 43625 750 mL

The Citluk winery is located in the city of Citluk. They make an array of wines starting with this classically Dalmatian grape, Plavac Mali. This comes from vines planted on limestone soils which is apparent with the firm mineral backbone you find on this delicious wine. Aged in large Bosnian oak barrels for 2 years.

Staff Pick Notes

Ok, ok...Just hear me out. Bosnia-Herzegovina (and the wider Balkan region, for that matter) are criminally overlooked when it comes to the world of wine, and I'm here to play a (VERY) small role in trying to rectify that problem. Plavac Mali isn't as foreign as you might think. The result of the crossing of native Balkan grape Dobricic and Zinfindel (native to Croatia!), the wine is full bodied with plenty of ripe dark fruit flavors and earthy accents of cigars and thick country dialect. But unlike some of its counterparts across the Atlantic (looking at you California), the alcohol is moderate and the acidity, in spite of its extended oak aging, is sufficient to still lend refreshment. So throw off your stereotypes like a bad memory from the 90s and give Balkan wine a chance.
