Das ist keine Orange, Schloss Mühlenhof - 2020

750 mL
Item # 44267

An accessible orange wine made from a blend of white grapes that are anywhere from 15 to 30 years old. The vines are planted on calcareous clay soils. The grapes were hand-harvested together in early October, allowed to macerate for eight weeks on skins with spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel lasting eight weeks. Unfiltered. Not an extreme type of orange wine but just lightly colored and slightly cloudy.

Production Methods

Practicing Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard.

Orange Wine (Skin Contact)

Orange wine is made by using white wine grapes, which are pressed and left in contact with the skins, seeds, and stems for an extended period of time, similar to how red wine is made.

This prolonged maceration extracts color, tannins, and phenols, giving the wine a darker, sometimes orange color. It also produces a wine with more structure and intense flavor.

Maceration times can vary between a few hours to many months, with longer contact giving more color and extraction.

Staff Pick Notes

“Das ist keine orange” is a wonderful first foray into the wild world of orange wines. It has the classic slight tannic bitterness from spending time on the skins and just a little bit of earthiness without going into an extreme funk zone. With minimal skin contact, the wine takes on a subtle straw-like hue, rather than the deep yellows, golds, and oranges of longer macerated wines. It's also unfiltered, making it cloudy with very visible fine sediment. White flowers and bitter grapefruit stand out the most for me, with light tannin and lively acidity. Das is keine orange, das ist ein wein.

Germany

German wines are some of the most jubilantly fruity bottles in the world. The country's Rieslings have been prized worldwide for centuries, yet they have never quite caught on in the U.S.: this no doubt due to Germany’s arcane system of wine classification. The most useful words to know on German wine labels are “Kabinett,” which indicates an outstanding everyday wine, and “trocken,” which means “dry.” As far as dessert wines go, a half-bottle of German Eiswein is so potent that you'll be able...

Pinot Gris

Pinot Grigio is an Italian synonym for the French Pinot Gris variety, but many more people have had Pinot Grigio than a Pinot Gris. At its most basic level, the grape produces varietals that are smooth and easy to drink, and perfect with a huge range of dishes that just beg to be paired with a fresh white wine. There is an entire spectrum of Pinot Gris/Grigio, however, the best of them being subtly aromatic and deeply colored, with formidable structures. Most of Italy's Pinot Grigio is grown in...
