Mâcon "Roche Blanche", Domaine Mathias - 2024

750 mL
Item # 44278

Since the 1950s, Domaine Mathias has been a family-run estate. Roche Blanche is a reference to the soils of this plot which are filled with a chalky-based white soil that contributes to the freshness on the palate. A richer white wine nonetheless that's made for early enjoyment.

Staff Pick Notes

Mâcon can offer us a wealth of delicious wine at prices that are much more accessible than other areas of Burgundy. This wine comes to us from Domaine Mathias, a 6th generation winemaking family based in Chaintré, right outside of the Pouilly-Fuissé AOC. They work their steep vineyards organically, striving to create a biodiverse habitat for animal life and native yeasts that aid fermentation. This wine is unoaked and fresh, offering a mineral stoniness that begs to be sipped again and again. This cuvée is named after the Roche Blanche, or white limestone, that can be found in much of the area's subsoil, which lends a hand to the wine's zippiness. Looking for Chablis but not on a Chablis budget? Try this out. Perfect with seafood, cold appetizers, and warm weather.

More About This Wine

Burgundy

The range of wine styles offered in Burgundy rivals that of any other region. In Chablis, Chardonnay is left unoaked to produce lean, crisp, steely wines with incredible acidity - a far cry from the vanilla-oak bombs that so many consumers associate with this grape. Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
