Montlouis-sur-Loire, "Les Cabotines", Ludovic Chanson - 2020

Item # 44509 750mL

Ludovic Chanson started making wine after a career as a pharmaceutical researcher, and took over an existing estate. He makes all white wine, save one rosé. This single parcel Chenin Blanc comes from the first pass through the vineyard, before being hand-harvested, and fermented and aged in used barriques. The residual sugar is not noticeable on the palate, but contributes to the lush and opulent texture of this classically style Montlouis-su-Loire. A wine for creamy poultry dishes, and rich white fishes.

Staff Pick Notes

I was recently able to taste this Chenin Blanc from the Montlouis-sur-Loire by Ludovic Chanson and it resonated with me immediately. 5 of his 6.2 hectares of grapes are dedicated to Chenin, so Chanson is extremely thorough with his harvests, especially given that he has 4-5 cuvées dedicated to Chenin alone. Grown in primarily clay soils with an underlying base of limestone, silex, and flint, this is a structured expression with concentration and vivacious texture. The grapes for "Les Cabotines” are from Chanson's first pass through the vineyards. They’re aged in old barriques, leaving some residual sugar on the wine without landing it in demi-sec territory. Beautiful honeyed character is complemented by baked apple, quince, allspice, and apricot notes making this a supple sipper with ample acid.

Glossary

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.

Chenin Blanc

A versatile grape that is grown worldwide, but is most commonly associated with the Loire, California, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. It produces just about any type of wine you can think of: ageworthy dessert wines; delicious, honeyed dry whites; sparklers; and even bases for fortified wines and spirits. These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...
