Faß 6 Ayler Riesling, Peter Lauer - 2022

Item # 45989 750mL

Faß or Fass is simply a barrel and this comes from barrel #4 which is a numbering tradition at the Lauer estate that stems from a vine site. Not just any estate but a exemplary Saar estate where the Riesling becomes ineffable and just otherworldly.

Staff Pick Notes

Much like wearing a striped sweater, the best time to drink Peter Lauer's Rieslings is all the time. Florian Lauer's productions are always full of tension, vivacious energy, balanced acidity, and purity of fruit. His Fass 4 is no exception. Employing natural fermentation to allow the wines to find their balance, Lauer harvests from the “1er Cru” Scheidterberg and Sonnenberg hills that curl around the village of Ayl. This Feinherb is a complex and intense example of a low-alcohol thought provoker. Even with the residual sugar, the wine just exudes slate-driven minerality with beautiful texture and wonderful notes of lemon, nectarine, and peaches. A wine full of concentration without excess or compromise. Just astounding.

Riesling

Though it's now cultivated worldwide, Riesling is nearly synonymous with German wine, and that country's winemakers have lately begun to produce some very exciting dry versions. They are careful to retain the delightful honeyed, flinty flavors that the best sweet Rieslings have always displayed. Alsace, of...
