Vína Herzánovi, Stara Škola - 2019

Item # 46647 750mL

Old School in Czech, Stara Škola is a field blend of Müller-Thurgau, Grüner Veltliner, Neuburger, and several others. About 10% was macerated on the skins for one month, and then blended into old French oak barrels. Very lightly amber in style, this is fresh, delicious, and accessible. Pair with guláš.

Staff Pick Notes

An invigorating wine that feels modern, despite the fact that it's fairly traditional. The name translates to "Old School" after all. Vina Herzanovi is in the Moravian village of Kobyli. They practice organic farming in their vineyards. The Stará Škola is a field blend made from older vines. The mix includes Müller-Thurgau, Gruner Veltliner and Neuberger among other grapes that are traditional in Central Europe. They were harvested together and immediately pressed as whole bunches. The wine was fermented in old French oak, and a small percentage was macerated on the skins for a month separately before being added back. The result is an easy-going, pale, amber-colored wine with dried fruit and spice on the palate. It glowed with an arrangement of open-faced sandwiches that included soft cheese, rye bread and pickles.

Glossary

Grüner Veltliner

Referred to by many Americans as "Gru-Ve," this white variety is nearly synonymous with Austrian wine. It's becoming wildly popular at the moment, especially compared to its obscure origins: it's known as the ultimate food wine for its great minerality and appealing freshness. The wines are consistent and eminently drinkable at the low end, and, on the premium side of things, full-bodied, long-lived, world-class whites.
