Staff Pick Notes

A VdF sourced entirely from fruit in Julie Balagny's 3.2 hectare parcel in the cru of Fleurie in Beaujolais, this wine sees a semi-carbonic maceration in concrete vats with a delicate, gentle pressing. Aging takes place in used Burgundian barrels, adding some structure to a deeply concentrated and vastly ripe wine. There are alluring notes of stewed blackberries, plums, black cherries, violets, lavender, and a touch of licorice and sweet herbs. Medium tannins are kept precisely in balance with well-tuned acidity, all the while displaying a very lush, silky texture that carries over all the character of the fruit. Louis Dressner secures their allocation of Balagny's wines with a pair of new Converses every year. Truly not all heroes wear capes, some wear classic Chuck Taylors.

Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most gulpable wine made anywhere, and it should be drunk very soon after its release, which occurs each year on the...
