Bertholdi is a red wine that's made from a single vineyard parcel of 70 year old Blaufränkisch vines. The fruit was hand-harvested and then pressed slowly over the course of two days with an ancient tree press. Robust. complex and rustic all at once. Pair with some baby lamb chops.

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're some of the best things coming out of Austria these days.

Zweigelt

Zweigelt, modestly named by Fritz Zweigelt of the Federal Institute for Viticulture and Pomology at Klosterneuburg, Austria in 1922, is a crossing of Blaufränkisch and St.-Laurent. It has risen to fame in its homeland and beyond, and now is the single most widely grown red grape variety in Austria.
