Dark and inky in color, this medium-bodied dry red is your typical Dornfelder, but with a brooding and earthy soul. The grapes are destemmed, and fermented in open top containers for 2 months. Aging takes places for 10 months is used French oak of varying size. Pair this savory red with pork in mushroom and cheese sauce.

Dornfelder is a grape that was created in 1955 to add texture, weight, and color to the pale and light traditional German reds. Since then, it has generated a modest following as a single varietal with recent plantings throughout the US, Canada, and The Czech Republic. Vina Herzanovi is a family winery in Moldova, following organic and biodynamic ways of farming and non interventionist methods of winemaking. Their Dornfelder is their one full bodied red. It appears opaque with a deep purple color. Its flavors are sour cherries, blackberries, and spice. You may also find slight hints of tea and licorice on the finish. The tannins are moderate and the acidity is brisk. Serve with braised and stewed meats. This is Astor's 3rd wine from Vina Herzanovi and all 3 are staff picks. If only The Mets would have a batting average like that.
