Ch. Coufran, Haut-Médoc - 2009

Item # 47386 750mL

From an opulent vintage, this blend of mostly Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied, with finesse and fine tannins. Rich black fruits, warm spices, and a hint of earth round out this supple and extremely well balanced wine. Pair with filet mignon in anchovy butter.

Staff Pick Notes

This is what I like to find here at Astor: a wine with some time in the bottle for a great price. A Merlot-dominated blend, (unusual for the Médoc, known more for their Cabernet Sauvignon wines, which makes me like this outlier even more) that's gorgeous, rustic, uncomplicated, and very approachable. An intense yet pretty nose of crushed berries, cherry, and sweet spices get us ready for a luxurious palate of juicy currant and cassis, with refreshing acidity and grippy tannins lending impeccable structure. Ch. Coufran have been at it for over a hundred years, and they do the cellaring work for us, only releasing wines when they are ready to drink, and they were right on time with this one. I paired mine with a roast almond and sundried tomato Turducken meatloaf, they got along famously.

For white Bordeaux, only three varieties are permitted: Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillion, and Muscadelle. The exact percentages of each grape variety used in any...

Cabernet Sauvignon

The result of an illicit affair a hundred-odd years ago between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon today enjoys more worldwide popularity than both of its parents combined. It is the principal grape of Bordeaux, and as such has rightly earned its place among the greatest and most long-lived wines of the Old World; of course, it is also the most heralded grape of California, positioning it at the forefront of the New World wine scene as well. Today, Cabernet Sauvignon has a...
