Subject to Change, Sparkling Rosé - 2022

Item # 49555

A dry canned rosé made from Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chenin Blanc. The Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon are vinified as a rosé wine, then this then spends a week on the skins of Chenin Blanc. A pale rose/orange color, this is medium-bodied with a hint of tannins. Pair with a mezze spread at a picnic.

Staff Pick Notes

I am a big fan of convenience. We are in somewhat of a golden age of canned wines as the price and carbon footprint of glass continues to rise, more and more producers are putting GOOD wines into cans. This is yet another example that we've brought in. A dry fun single serving made primarily from Zinfandel, with a splash of Cabernet and Chenin Blanc (but just aged on the skins). It has good acidity and while it is dry, it reminds me of cherry Jolly Ranchers. Take a few of these to central park for a picnic with some ham and turkey sandwiches from your local bodega.

Glossary

California

California makes more wine than any other state in the United States. Not only does the state grow a variety of noble grape varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, there are also plantings of lesser-known varieties such as Nebbiolo, Roussanne and Mourvèdre to name just a few.

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is widely thought of as “America’s grape,” but in fact the variety is of Croatian origin, and is genetically extremely similar to Italian Primitivo, which thrives in the warmest parts of southern Italy. Like Primitivo, Zinfandel requires warm but not hot growing conditions, as its skins are relatively thin: this can cause its berries to shrivel into raisins if left on the vine a little too long. Dry and well-drained terroirs are also preferable for Zinfandel, as its bunches are...

Chenin Blanc

A versatile grape that is grown worldwide, but is most commonly associated with the Loire, California, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. It produces just about any type of wine you can think of: ageworthy dessert wines; delicious, honeyed dry whites; sparklers; and even bases for fortified wines and spirits. These days, one of the most exciting stories is in South Africa, where newly adopted winemaking technologies have helped a dedicated group of producers to bring the country's dry...

Cabernet Sauvignon

The result of an illicit affair a hundred-odd years ago between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon today enjoys more worldwide popularity than both of its parents combined. It is the principal grape of Bordeaux, and as such has rightly earned its place among the greatest and most long-lived wines of the Old World; of course, it is also the most heralded grape of California, positioning it at the forefront of the New World wine scene as well. Today, Cabernet Sauvignon has a...
