Meursault "Les Clous Dessous", Maison de Montille - 2023

750 mL
Item # 54286

Les Clous Dessous is a recent parcel acquisition in the De Montille family. Until they farm and vinify for a few years, they have opted to bottle under the Maison label. The grapes were farmed and harvested and aged in the De Montille cellars. Aged for a year in a mix of barrels, 25% new. This is a full-bodied white wine with a purity that is palpable and with the signature of the estate, elegance.

Staff Pick Notes

In the rarified world of Burgundy, every domaine has a story. And yet, not every tale is as fascinating, and triumphant as that of Maison de Montille, whose origins date to the 14th century. Montille’s massive estate, which once included vineyards across multiple crus, dwindled to under 3 hectares by the 1940’s when Hubert Montille began the turnaround. Today, Hubert's son has expanded the winery’s reach with Mason de Montille, a project focusing on small and undervalued terroirs from throughout Burgundy. The Meursault "Les Clous Dessous", typifies the project: the grapes are biodynamically farmed and harvested and aged in a mix of old and new barrels. The result is a Chardonnay that’s rich, yet elegant, with aromas of yellow apple, toasted nuts, vanilla, and honey that give way to a full, balanced palate. A tale worth savoring.

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
