Enzo Pasquale Abruzzo, Italy The winery “Praesidium” is owned by Enzo Pasquale, and is located away from the coast, in the heart of the Abruzzo region. The vineyards of Praesidium are in fact in a valley near the large village of Sulmona, native birth place of the famous Latin poet Ovidius. Over hills exposed to the East, the winery’s sunkissed vines grow at about 300 meters above sea level. The name Praesidium, comes from the Latin original name of the village Prezza where the Pasquale family live and make wine, in an area particularly favorable to the cultivation of the Montepulciano grape. The winery was founded in 1988 yet Enzo Pasquale has been producing wine since he was a young boy as he was very attached to his land, working the vineyards of Montepulciano that belonged to his grandparents. Praesidium wines are obtained from the greatest respect of nature, its soil and its fruits. The soil in fact is chalky, slit, clayey and rich in schist. The vineyards extend for 5 ha and are 25 years old. Manual pruning in winter assures restricted yields at harvest. Compost is done by using strictly natural manure. Even though not yet certified as Organic, “Praesidium” wines are artisan, using low percentage of SO2 (sulphur dioxide) and therefore can be intended as Organic because they are conceived according to nature, without chemical products neither in the vineyard nor in the cellar. The winery’s efforts are experienced in their robust Montepulciano, in all its forms, complex, long and surprising!
