A charming blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo called “Benedic.” Despite a two-week maceration, “Benedic” is typically a beautifully pale, translucent wine. Aromas of red licorice, dried leaves, and fresh pipe tobacco with delicate earthy red fruit flavors. A softly floral edge with subtle tannins. The sisters make a miniscule amount of red wine, grab a bottle while you can.

Thirty miles north of Rome, some of the most exciting & honest wines in all of Italy are created by the Sisters of the Cistercian Order of Strict Observance, also known as "Trappists". With origins in Latium dating to 1098, they sure have a deep knowledge of this land, and with guidance from Giampiero Bea, son of the legendary Paolo Bea, they have channeled this wisdom into wine. Bea is the first to say that he is merely a consultant here, while the sisters do all the hard work. Sangiovese & Ciliegiolo are planted on volcanic soil, farmed organically, hand harvested (no machines here), and bottled with minimal sulfites. The result is a natural wine full of nuances that quietly reveal themselves. The nuns capture the essence of the land masterfully, with sandalwood, floral tones, delicate fruits, and a balsamic edge all present.
