Viñedo de los Vientos has been a family-owned winery since the first relatives immigrated from Piedmont in 1920. The vineyards are located close to the Atlantic Ocean, and enjoy one of the coolest climates in Uruguay as a result. The Tannat is hand-harvested, fermented in stainless steel, and aged in both stainless and new French oak. This dry red wine is a great pairing with Uruguay's treasured grilled beef.
On one of my solo travels I found myself in Montevideo, Uruguay. I randomly walked into Chef Lucia Soria’s beautiful restaurant, Jacinto. I had not planned on a three-course meal, but the server had already poured me a glass of Tannat. I had never had the grape variety and it was captivating. I ended up staying for all three courses. Tannat made its way from France to Uruguay, where it became a national hero. It offers aromas of blackberries, prunes, and peppercorn. I had charred octopus that night and I highly recommend this pairing, but you can’t go wrong with anything from the grill.
