Staff Pick Notes

I was looking to try a multitude of neutral, Italian white wines for a class I was taking. I decided, on a whim, to take a bottle of Gavi home. I am not usually a drinker of Gavi, so I went with a producer I knew made wonderful red wine from the Langhe region in Piedmont. Francesco Rinaldi "Vecchie Vigne" Gavi is made form 100% Cortese grapes and steel fermented so the juice retains its fresh and floral characteristics. White peaches, green pears, lemon peel, and white lily aromas improve and concentrate with a little time in glass. In the mouth the wine is medium weight with a markedly austere elegance. A nervy acidity gives this wine incredible freshness while a pleasant bitter almond finish is long and focused. Pairs nicely with roasted white fish with lemon or a freshly buttered pasta with a copious amount of Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Cortese

A white variety grown throughout much of Italy, but most widely known for the lovely wines it produces in Piedmont's Gavi DOCG. The best Cortese wines are fresh, aromatic and fruity, with a bracing minerality and citrus on the finish.
