Transcontinental Rum 6yr Australia Rum - 2013

The first in this series from Australia, this rum was created from cane grown in Queensland and it has traveled around the world and back again to be here with us in NY. A vibrant rum, we found notes that reminded us of dried stone fruits, carmelized apples, crème brûlée and whole spices. No additives or artificial anything ever, this is a pure, dry rum. Available in limited quantities.

Staff Pick Notes

While Australia has been on my radar for fantastic craft distilling for some time now, I had never had an Australian rum before this bottle. Turns out, not only do they make fantastic cane spirits, the Beenleigh distillery has been doing it for more than 135 years. This vintage-dated, 6-year-old is bottled at a solid, but not punishing, 48% ABV. It spent the first 4 years of its life aging in the Australian climate, then came over the water to France where La Maison du Whisky moved the spirit into ex-Cognac casks for another 2 years and change. It's a remarkably distinctive rum that drinks beautifully on its own, with aromas of gasoline, candied and preserved lime, vanilla, allspice, and something unique that reminds me of an earthy, oversteeped peppermint tea.
