Call me cynical but whiskey is a racket and a geographical taxonomy of scotch is not useful. All smoky scotch doesn't come from the same part of Scotland and you'd actually be hard pressed to make a statement that would tell you exactly what the breakdown is. Believe it or not, your best bet is to try as many different things as possible if you're dedicated to the experience. Ledaig doesn't fly off the shelf because it's not one of the better known brands, but it's a lovely peated expression that has the weight of Talisker and salt and spice to boot. It's an elegant counterpoint to the earthy, medicinal peat bombs we all know, but still has enough to please devout fans of those as well.

History:Distillation was brought to Scotland from Ireland by missionary monks in the 6th century.
