The Amaro Lucano, produced in Basilicata, is made based on an ancient recipe using rare herbs and roots with an unmistakable flavor. Richly textured and possessing equal amounts of sweetness, spiciness, and bitter herbaceousness, this is one of the most complex and traditional Amari out there.
It's easy to get overwhelmed looking at all these Amaros. Here is a nice place to start. This camaro was created by Cavalier Pasquale Vena in Pisticci, Italy, in 1894. For over a century this family-owned operation has been making this wonderfully balanced herbal Amaro. I think a lot of people come to Amaro from Fernet Branca, which is a kind of Amaro, but really not a great representation of the category. A beautiful Amaro like Lucano is the perfect finish to a long day or a big meal. It's not harsh or overly medicinal.
