Pinotage, a cross of Cinsault and Pinot Noir, thrives in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa. Kanonkop has long been recognized as producing the benchmark for this variety. Richly fruited with mouth-coating notes of red and black berries in a medium bodied style, this wine has good structure for aging and avoids the astringency so commonly found with this particular grape variety.

This juicy, deep ruby red Pinotage is the first South African wine that really grabbed my attention. Pinotage was created in 1925 by cross breading Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. The later grape is the former Hermitage grape, hence the name Pinotage. It has a nose of peppery dark forest fruits and a lush lightly spiced cherry taste that is long and very smooth to the finish. This wine will of course be a great companion to red meats but also think Asian cuisine! It’s a great match. Last night I had it with a lemon and ginger chicken dish I threw together. You’ll love this wine and certainly get your dollars worth.
