Hefeabzug means aged on the lees. This is Grüner Veltliner as Muscadet - with crisp, salty minerality on the palate and so much more body and spice. The Nikolaihof winery is one of the oldest wine estates in Austria, whose history goes back almost 2000 years to the Roman empire.

Staff Pick Notes

When I think of Gruner Veltliner, I think of uber easy-drinking screwtop liters that so many of us gravitate towards for springtime in the park. I was pleasantly surprised and definitely impressed when I tasted the Gruner from Nikolaihof, the oldest wine estate in Austria, and found notes of petrol, green herbs, and a ton of smokiness. The fruit in this bottle is much more subdued than your typical porch pounder Gruner, and I fell in love with this expression. The Saahs family runs the Nikolaihof estate, located in the Wachau region, with as little intervention as possible and even has their own specially produced biodynamic principles under the Demeter Association. No longer reserved for warm weather, Gruner Veltliner should be enjoyed all year - especially with spicy pork and chive dumplings.

Blauer Zweigelt), which yields full-bodied wines, deep in color and featuring bold flavors of...
