Château Cantemerle has a thorny history when it comes to the 1855 Bordeaux classification. It was initially left off, but after intense lobbying from owner Caroline de Villeneuve-Durfort was later included as a Fifth Growth estate. Remarkable for the fact that this was one of the few changes made to the listing to this day. The estate now has gone through several hands and it's been modernized, but they continue to make stand out Médoc reds. Les Allées de Cantemerle is the estate's second wine, and it's prime for drinking in its youth. It is a wine that straddles the line between power and finesse. And it has the elements I love about red Bordeaux—earthy intensity played off by freshness and acidity. It's a catch-all wine to pair with hearty foods like Shepherds pie or a Sunday roast.
