Notios Red Neméa, Gai'a - 2023

750 mL
Item # 15310

Notios means "the southerner," and this easy-drinking red is indeed from southern Greece. It is made from the local Agiorgitiko, with 15% Syrah, which in this case has yielded a soft, velvety wine with plum and cherry flavors.

Staff Pick Notes

This is such an easily appealing wine that would likely have a much larger following if people weren't scared off by the difficult-to-pronounce grape "Agioritiko". But while it might be difficult to correctly pronounce, it couldn't be easier to enjoy. Agioritiko blended with about 20% Syrah, the wine is comfortably medium-bodied and generously fruited with really soft tannins and sufficient acidity to give refreshment. Pair this wine with nearly anything and serve with a light chill. Oh yeah, and it also has a screwcap. You're welcome.

Syrah

We'd like to clear this up once and for all: the Shiraz grape is genetically identical to Syrah. Australian winemakers put "Shiraz" on the map (and, many would argue, vice versa), and the term is now used throughout much of the New World. Let it never be said, however, that Shiraz and Syrah are the same thing: the region in which the grape is grown determines much about the flavor of the wine it will produce. Typically, New World Shiraz yields bigger, fruitier wines than the the peppery Syrahs...

Agiorgitiko

Pronounced "ah yor YEE ti ko", this is one of the most prolific red varieties of Greece. This hard-to-pronounce grape is often called “St. George” for international marketing purposes, and makes some beautiful, easy-drinking, light to medium-bodied wines. If you’re a fan of fruit-driven reds like Pinot Noir or Gamay, this is a good grape to try out.
