Staff Pick Notes

Ruinart's NV Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne is probably its most famous style of Champagne and is made entirely from Chardonnay grapes, sourced from Premier Cru vineyard in the Côtes des Blancs and Montagne de Reims areas of Champagne. Their elegant, signature style comes from four years' worth of sitting on its lees, just after the second fermentation, followed by rest in Ruinart's ancient Roman chalk cellars deep beneath the city of Reims. It has a healthy dosage level of about 9g/l, but is supremely balanced with bright acidity and is very food-friendly. The nose is a decadent, heady mix of fruit (apples, pears, apricots), butter cookie, and Meyer lemon. The palate has a lovely, fresh, fruit and bread character, as if you took a yellow apple and covered it in a honey butter. Delicious and timeless! Erik G

About the Producer

Ruinart is the oldest established Champagne house, exclusively producing champagne since 1729. The house was founded after the 1728 edict of Louis XV, which authorized the transport of wine in bottles. Prior to this, wine could only be transported in barrels, making...

These winemakers control every aspect of grape cultivation and vinification, from the vine to the finished bottle, which is...

Chardonnay

From Champagne to Chablis, it's hard (not to mention unpleasant) to avoid this famous white variety. During a huge popularity surge beginning in the late 1980s, Chardonnay plantings have increased dramatically -- not only in California's wine country, with which the variety is nearly synonymous, but also in Burgundy (its original, Old World home) and just about everywhere else in the winemaking world. It is a flexible, eager-to-please grape, responding well to just about anything a winemaker...
