La Bohème Blanc, Marc Pesnot - 2020

Item # 21146 750mL

When Marc Pesnot refers to his young vines, he means they're "only" 30-50 years old! Needless to say, this young-vine cuvée is quite dense with ripe fruit, balanced out by bracing acidity and great minerality. The nose has seashell hints (typical of western Loire Valley soil) mingled with citrus notes. Truly a fresh and lovely offering.

Staff Pick Notes

This was the first bottle of wine I had when I came to Astor and it is easily still one of my favorites. Marc Pesnot is a serious wine-maker who makes fun and exciting wines. This bottle has ample amounts of nearly everything you want from a white wine. Since the average age of the vines for this Melon de Bourgogne are 30 to 50 years, the fruit is noticeably more vibrant than your average muscadet. Perfectly balanced with a clean streak of minerals that make your mouth water and fresh crisp acidity to cleanse the palate and keep you coming back for more! With food, shellfish is the classic pairing and works beautifully here, but it is also fantastic on its own and extremely easy to drink. This wine is a dichotomy of complexity and elegance and if you haven’t had natural wines before, this bottle will make you an instant believer.

Pairing Advice

With this kind of bracing acidity, you really need something rich. Try a creamy tart made with caramelized onions.

Glossary

Melon de Bourgogne

Loire

There’s a lot to remember when it comes to the Loire. Novices, take note: Cabernet Franc is a great alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscadet is unparalleled as a companion to shellfish, and Cour Cheverny is the best white wine appellation you’ve never heard of. As diverse as Loire wines are, one day soon you'll know your Melon de Bourgogne from your Romorantin.
