Rieslings aren't exactly the cool kids on the wine block, so Alsatian rieslings? Yeah, no. Their under-the-radar status, however, translates to bargains for us. This wine from Dom. Mittnacht is a prime example. This is a small, family-run winery, founded in 1963 and is now run by Christophe Mittnacht and his partner Yuka. Christophe was an early convert to biodynamics, getting officially certified in 1999, and believes in minimal intervention when it comes to winemaking. All that care and attention shine through in the glass. This is a fuller style of riesling, but bone dry, with ripe white plum, honeysuckle, pear skin and a gentle hint of petrol. Pair this with a roast pork or chicken on a cold winter night, and drink a toast to the unhip kids of Alsace.

Pairing Advice

Disassociate this wine from the descriptors "hot" or "viscous." This is an ideal wine for tarte flambée, the regional Alsatian thin-crust "pizza" topped with fromage blanc, onion, and strips of bacon. The wine's racy acid and body will do well against the richness of this pizza, which was traditionally baked on the bottom of a bread oven so that the burning bacon drippings from the pizza would add a smoky element to the pie.
