St. Joseph "Les Ribaudes", Domaine Faury - 2022

This is a traditionally made Saint-Joseph that is very pure in its expression of Syrah fruit. The vines are older, planted between 1979 and 2007 and in pure granite soils. The grapes that go into this wine come from a single parcel that is set apart from the rest of the appellation's vineyards. Faury uses only old wood, allowing the granite soil of the region to speak loudly and clearly. Very concentrated and full of leathery and peppery notes on the nose and palate.

Staff Pick Notes

This lively Syrah had me scratching my head during a recent blind tasting. When I first put my nose into the glass, I smiled to myself, certain that this could only be Pinot Noir. A blast of cherry shot out of the glass and the wine had a translucence I would associate with a lighter style like Pinot and definitely not with Syrah. When I stuck my nose back into the glass, the world turned upside down and I realized just how wrong I was. I'd just been handed a bouquet of bacon and red roses, sprinkled with black pepper. I couldn't wait to taste. Smoky, meaty, floral, packed with dried herbs and heaps of pepper. Even in this timed blind tasting setting I had to pause, take a moment, close my eyes and savor - I had to stop and smell the roses (and bacon fat).
