Tasting Notes

A layered, brooding, complex wine with aromas of dark cherry, strawberry, dried tobacco leaf & lavender. It’s plush with black plum flavors that deepen into dark coffee, smoke and earth. Notes of minerality, dried sage and bright cherry return at the finish. This a great red wine to sip alone or with any meaty fare.

Staff Pick Notes

If you have internalized Paul Giamatti's Sideways character's supposed "hatred" for Merlot, now is the time to reconsider. After all, the ironic joke lost on most was that for all his complaining about Merlot, his prized bottle of 1961 Cheval Blanc... Was Merlot (with some Cabernet Franc). A well-made Merlot like this Gundlach Bundschu is a beautiful thing to experience. If your best warm, fuzzy blanket was a wine, it would be this Merlot. It's soft and plush, wrapping you up in ripe black and red fruits, purple flowers, a bit of mocha, and some herbs on the finish. This wine is still robust and structured enough to be perfect for roasted or grilled meats, savory umami rich vegetarian fare, or even drunk on its own!

Some wine drinkers are quick to dismiss varieties that become too fashionable, but Merlot is popular for good reason. It has one of the most impressive and distinctive textures of any wine,...
