The greatness of Monvigliero lies in its signature aromatics. Burlotto's Barolo is lush, yet refined, with heady floral notes of violets comingled with roses. A delicate sprinkling of pink peppercorns add character; altogether, this is a young, pretty Nebbiolo. In time, one expects more savory notes of olive tapenade, cedar and even truffles to dominant. One can certainly enjoy this wine in it's juvenile, fresh incarnation or wait, cellaring for multiple years as it attains full potential. Monvigliero is a single vineyard of 45 yr old vines growing in limestone and the resulting wines are very distinctive. The Nebbiolo is still crushed by foot, macerated 60 days and aged in large wooden botti. Burlotto mingles classical technique with idiosyncratic modernity.
