Quinta do Infantado Tinto, Douro - 2019

750 mL
Item # 26817

From one of our favorite Port producers, their still red wine, a blend of grapes used in the fortified wine, is difficult to resist. Traditional production and all estate grown, this is scrumptious blend of mixed berries, purple damson plums and holiday spices. The texture leans to the more food-friendly austere side, as acidity rubs up against darkened tannins. A wine that emphatically demands a plate of gamey roast pork or lamb. Equally fine with bitter eggplants and herb roasted vegetables.

Staff Pick Notes

Quinta do Infantado started its production back in 1816. The Douro region has been recognized for a long time as a great wine region because of: the great "terroir", the combination of natural aspects that make a good vine growing region, the climate, the soil and the exposure to the sun from the start! It's still a region mostly known for its fortified wines. This delicious, dry wine is made with Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. The grapes used for this wine give body, color and a lot of flavors: black fruit, herbal notes and minerality. A fair amount of alcohol is well balanced by the acidity, the smooth tannins and a very, very delicate touch of sweetness! I would pair it with roasted meats.

About the Producer

Quinta do Infantado, based in Pinhão, has been a leader in estate-bottled Ports since 1979. Prior to 1986, the British monopoly on Port required that all exported Ports be sent in bulk to Vila Nova de Gaia, 60 miles west of the Douro Valley, where they were bottled and shipped. This practice effectively prevented small private producers from exporting their wines, since the cost of running an...

Portugal

The Dão and the Douro are the most important regions as far as red Portuguese table wine is concerned. Douro wines tend to be a bit fuller and fleshier than their Dão counterparts, which are generally lighter and higher in acidity. Reds from both regions are dense, rustic, and well-balanced. They also show their terroir quite clearly, and represent a great alternative to the modern fruit-driven style. Vinho Verde is Portugal’s most famous white wine. Literally translated as "green wine," it...
