Production Methods

Practicing Organic

Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard.

Tasting Notes

A savory, deliciously fresh red blend of Rhône varieties dominated by Syrah with some Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Grenache, and Carignan thrown in. The full palate opens with mingled red and black cherries, balanced by powerful acidity. Flavors and aromas mirror each other and evolve into notes of scrubland herbs and musk. Funky-yet-accessible, this is excellent with grilled lamb, roast pork, and charred broccoli rabe. Mullineux is a family of quality-conscious growers. The wine was vinified by individual parcel; grapes were sourced from a range of soils and terroirs, including Mourvèdre from iron-rich slopes, Syrah and Cinsault grown on shale and schist, and bush-trained Carignan and Grenache from decomposed granite soils.

Staff Pick Notes

Swartland is the name of the region where this wine is produced. In the past, different agricultural produce was planted here and grapes were not the most important. Now it's very different. Wine producers discovered the potential of this very varied soil, the sunny warm hills, the warm days, the cool nights. They realized that this was a perfect environment for grape growing and winemaking. The Mullineux family has a very "natural" approach to their wine making: production is organic and biodynamic. Rhône varieties such as Syrah and Grenache are planted here. This wine is easy to drink but, at the same time, it shows the great qualities of those grapes. Maybe this wine is fruitier than its counterparts in France, but you can still taste herbal and spicy notes on the palate!

Astor's Glossary of Terms

The Grenache grape (a.k.a. Grenache Noir) produces relatively pale, fruity red wines that often stop just short of sweetness. Grenache is familiar to most wine drinkers as an ingredient in the blends of the Rhône and Languedoc-Roussillon, where it can add charm to varieties that are a little rougher around the edges. The distinguished Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas appellations are both...

Grown all over Europe and the Americas, Carignan (a.k.a. Carignane, Carignano, and Cariñena) is seldom seen as a 100% varietal wine. Many appellations of Languedoc-Roussillon must include a certain percentage of Carignan, but it is rarely the dominant grape in these blends. For years, this naturally high-yielding grape suffered from overproduction, but New World winemakers have lately taken up...

South Africa

South Africa is often lumped together, under some arbitrary umbrella heading, with the other wine-producing regions of the southern hemisphere - South America, Australia, New Zealand, etc. This does a severe injustice both to the fantastic wines of South Africa and to the wine consumer: the region is peerless in its harmonious synthesis of New and Old World winemaking styles. Wines lately coming...
