Fortaleza Blanco Tequila

Item # 27859 750 mL

Fortaleza was one of the first brands of premium tequila introduced into the States way back in 1870 and is one of the far too rare vestiges of traditional tequila now available to us. One of their former distilleries which was functioning as a Tequila Museum has been recently reopened and production began on the same boilers that were originally used over 100 years ago! Thankfully virtually nothing has changed. Only estate grown agave are used at peak ripeness which are crushed with a traditional Tahona and sugar cane, fructose, and other sweetening agents are never used. The resulting spirit is pure, delicate, and profound showcasing complex agave character, classic pepper and earth, along with bright volcanic minerality and distinguished floral quality. As near to perfect a tequila we could imagine.

Staff Pick Notes

With five generations of tequila making expertise, Guillermo Sauza has reopened an old distillery, which had been closed because it was not efficient enough to keep up with local production. It simply wasn't modern enough, so it became a museum showing how Tequila used to be made. But something was missing in all of these modern distillates, a character or soul that had been lost and almost forgotten. Guillermo was inspired to take this museum and make it a living embodiment of the past, and he did just that. Stone-crushed agave, brick ovens, and open-air wood tanks are once again being used to create an elixir that is 100% Tequila. You will find incredible depth and complexity here, with the cooked agave flavor nearly leaping out of the glass followed by whispers of basil, olives, and minerals.
