Tasting Notes

Château Hourtin-Ducasse is a small, family-owned property located in St. Sauvers which surrounds Pauillac. The château has existed since the 18th century but its current owners purchased the property in 1976 and have dedicated themselves to preserving the character of each vintage all the while allowing terroir to be present in the final wine. Fermented in barrels and then aged for just over a year in 41% new oak barrels.

Staff Pick Notes

The winemakers at Hourtin Ducasse Michel Marengo call this wine "velvet." I wholeheartedly agree because it has a softer texture and easier tannins that play nicely with the oak barrel aging. Patient drinkers who wait 5-7 years will be rewarded...but who wants to wait that long? This is a "drink now" Bordeaux! My wife and I enjoyed it with prime rib burgers, but anything from steak frites to a roast chicken or lamb chops would do! At this price, it's too good to pass up.

There are (for all intents and purposes) five grape varieties permitted under French wine law for red Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and, very infrequently, Petit Verdot and Malbec. For white Bordeaux, only three varieties are permitted:...

Cabernet Franc

Relegated to moderate obscurity in modern times, Cabernet Franc is in fact the proud parent of the attention-hogging Cabernet Sauvignon (after an illicit affair with Sauvignon Blanc a hundred-odd years ago). Cabernet Franc has remained close to its roots in France, enjoying small pockets of popularity primarily in the Loire Valley (specifically in Chinon), where it is often bottled as a varietal...

Cabernet Sauvignon

The result of an illicit affair a hundred-odd years ago between Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon today enjoys more worldwide popularity than both of its parents combined. It is the principal grape of Bordeaux, and as such has rightly earned its place among the greatest and most long-lived wines of the Old World; of course, it is also the most heralded grape of California,...
