Staff Pick Notes

Zajc, Cvicek 2018

This unique wine has a gorgeous bright raspberry color from a mix of both white and red grapes. This wine is not quite a rose and not quite a red, but happily and deliciously somewhere in the middle. Organic, low alcohol, and approachable with its light bright red fruit flavors of strawberry, cherry, and raspberry; this wine can handle anything you want to throw at it. Snack dinner on the rooftop? It's perfect. Netflix and chill with your dog and take out? It would be great. Don't know what kind of wine to bring to your friend's get together? Choose this! Pronounced "tsvee-check" it's an amiable and fun 1L bottle, and your host will applaud you for bringing the national drink of Slovenia instead of the unexciting mass produced wines that usually show up at these things. $12.96

Glossary

Blaufränkisch

Germans call it Lemberger, Austrians call it Blaufränkisch; let's call the whole thing off. What's important is that this black grape variety produces spicy wines with good tannins and firm acidity, similar to one of the crus of Beaujolais; in fact, until recently, Blaufränkisch was believed to be Gamay. These are often ageworthy wines, and they're some of the best things coming out of Austria these days.
