Colares Ramisco Red, Adega Viuva Gomes - 2015

Item # 30643 500mL

Colares is a small appellation northwest of Lisbon and one of Portugal's oldest. Planted entirely in sand, the vines growing there are ungrafted, and very, very old. The red grape of Colares is Ramisco, which grows nowhere else in the world. This expression from Viuva Gomes is rare and remarkable.

Berried fruit on the nose give way to some spice and earth on the palate. The proximity of the vineyards to the ocean gives this wine a briney quality that would make it a great red wine to pair with seafood.

They also show their terroir quite clearly, and represent a great alternative to the modern fruit-driven style. Vinho Verde is Portugal’s most famous white wine.
