Having lived in New York City my entire life, the hustle and pep in my step has been intertwined deep in my DNA. Wine reminds me more often than not to take time to breathe and let things fall in place. The Monje family has been making wine since the 1700s in Tenerife on the Canary Islands. They have extremely old vines and beyond neutral barrels (200 years old). This wine is a semi-carbonic, macerated expression of Listán Negro from a single parcel with vines 40-60 years in age. Allowing it some time (30 minutes) to decant turns what is a feral beast of a wine into something pleasantly forthcoming. Find sweet tobacco smoke, allspice, BBQ seasoning, cranberries, and blueberries. The potency and depth of flavor along with its racy acid unfurls the tannins, reminding them to unwind a bit. Wine rewards patience.
