Staff Pick Notes

The Valtellina Valley in Lombardy boasts some of Italy’s most compelling terroir (and best cheese) for growing Nebbiolo (or Chiavennasca, as they call it). The river runs west to east so the treacherously steep slopes on the north side enjoy maximum sun exposure. Alfio Mozzi is a star winemaker there. He grows his vine organically on sandy limestone soils at 1200-2000 feet elevation. These conditions contribute to wines whose power is embodied in elegance. The velvety opulent texture is the best part of this wine. It feels as if it has somehow been polished with the finest of sandpaper. Flavors of Cherry Ludens, and plums are densely packed. The 18 months in large French casks and 6 months in bottle give this a maturity that will improve for at least a decade. Try washing down a morsel of Taleggio.
